With over a trillion Web pages currently available online and new sites being added every day, the internet noise is getting louder. The Web offers an ever-expanding repository of information, and people are determined to find the data they want. Users will persistently try various search terms and tools to get to what they need, but most people have to refine their search an average of three times before they find the information they’re seeking. Semanti believes that finding information shouldn’t require this much time and effort.
Many technology solutions have been attempted to solve this problem. Companies using natural language processing (NLP), artificial intelligence (AI), structural data solutions and page ranking algorithms have all attempted to make searching easier. However, all these solutions have their limitations – AI and NLP are still nascent and produce mixed results at best and other solutions rely on the structure of the data rather than trying to understand what the data means. Semanti believes that a semantic classification system that relies on the ‘wisdom of the crowds’ is the best approach because it draws from the experience and judgment of real people, rather than computers which are inherently flawed when trying to decipher the human mind.
Understanding what each web page is semantically about improves a user’s ability to find what they want and also provides opportunities for advertisers to promote goods and services in a more meaningful context.
